    Hallo Thomas,

thank you for your new messages.

I believe Christine is currently on her well-deserved annual vacation. She last logged in here on August 6.

    1.) Frankfurt am Main.
Parts of the city's population register have been preserved.

The link is here. On the page, you need to look at the section entitled “Registration documents.”

The address for ordering copies is here.

    2.) Berlin Lindenstraße 111.
Today, the Berlin State Archives only contain a card index created after 1945. This means that it is no longer possible to find evidence of anyone who lived in Berlin between 1900 and 1906 and did not have their own household. People with their own households are listed in the directories. You can look at the Berlin directories yourself. - here. and here you have the heads of households in Berlin, 1900, Lindenstraße 111.

    3.) Anitas birthplace
OK, not in Wernigerode and surroundings.

Berlin - as far as I know, Berlin's civil registry records were preserved in their entirety. This is actually inconceivable when you consider the state of the city in May 1945. The birth records of Berlin are available online at Ancestry. Anita is not listed there.

What about Danzig, or where did Leo's parents live after 1900?

    Regards
    Werner

      Hi Werner,

      Thank you for your response.

      Addressing your points below:

      1) Thank you for providing me with direction on what to do in the Frankfurt am Main City Register. Reading the second half of the second paragraph in the section, you refer, it is stated: "To find a person within a Hausstandsbuch, however, you need to have the address, so that the relevant book can be identified."

Looking back into the posts in this thread, I cannot find any addresses in Frankfurt am Main. Maybe I am missing something?

      2) I will have a look. Thank you very much.

      3) Thank you for looking for Anita in Berlin. I will take a note of this.

I have limited information on the whereabouts of Leo's parents. What I know is that:

      - Leo's father: Carl Franz von Dühren was born in Danzig in 1840, lived in Danzig in 1878 when Leo was born, and died in Danzig in 1913.
      - Leo's mother: Renate Marie Schultz was born in 1853 (place unknown), lived in Danzig in 1878 when Leo was born, and I have no information about her death. I know, however, that she left for New York City from Hamburg on 17 July 1913 and arrived 1 August 1913. Where she was born, and where she died, I do not know. I will start looking into her again.

The von Dührens were Mennonites, so I have been able to find extensive information about them.

      Have a great evening.

      Best,

      Thomas

It is from Ancestry, and I will try to transcribe it. I have a hard time reacing it (https://www.ancestry.com/search/coll...=successSource).

          Hallo Thomas,

the city of Frankfurt am Main currently has four resident registration files:

          1.) From 1868 to 1932
It is called the “Nullkartei” (zero file), it is arranged alphabetically by surname, and only about half of it survived the Second World War.

          2.) 1932 to 1945
These are not index cards, but house registers. To find a person in them, you need to know their Frankfurt address. Only about half of these books survived the Second World War.

          3.) 1945-1965
This card index is again sorted by surname, is only available on microfilm, and only contains people who died in Frankfurt before 1966 or moved away from Frankfurt before 1966.

          4.) 1966-present
I assume that this index is available as a database. However, it is not located in the city archives, but at the city administration.

This means that a search using the last name is possible for the period around 1900, but due to war losses, there is only a 50% chance of success.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now on to Danzig. Attached are the death certificates of Leo's parents and copies from the Danzig directories of 1900 and 1907. The family lived at Langgarten 21 during this time.

According to a US source, Antia was born on October 22, 1902. I looked through the birth certificates from August 22 to 31, 1902, from the Danzig-Stadt registry office. She is not there.

There is a name index of births from the Danzig-Stadt registry office for 1903 in a Polish archive – she is not listed there either.

I believe Ancestry has the complete birth certificates from this registry office from 1900 to 1905, and she is not listed in the index there either.

On February 24, 1906, she traveled by ship from Rotterdam to the United States with her sister Elsa and mother. The trip is said to have been booked from Berlin.

Upon arrival in New York on March 7, 1906, Johanna stated with Elsa and Anita that they had previously been in Danzig and that Johanna and Elsa had left the US in 1903.

Perhaps they arrived in Hamburg in 1903. They were then certainly in Berlin and Danzig. Then Anita was born “somewhere” in between.

          Regards
          Werner
