I am searching for baptism records regarding my ancestor, Johann Caspar STAUDT, son of Henrich STAUDT. According to Caspar's 1743 marriage (in Wörrstadt), the STAUDT family is from Altenberg. I attached a picture of the marriage entry.

Can anyone give suggestions as to the location of Altenberg? The only Altenberg I find on a map is in Saxony, south of Dresden. I wonder if there are other possibilities? Thank you.

    Regards,

    Ellen

      Hello

Once upon a time there was a large hunting lodge (castle) in the area, with the name Altenburg.

The German word for "hunting castle" ist Jagdschloss

The Jagdschloss Altenburg had been (before it was destroyed) near the today Dettenheim called village --> https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dettenheim

        I have to correct myself:
The place of the Altenburg ist today called Karlsdorf - https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karlsdorf-Neuthard

See the historical map: "Karlsdorf (fr. Altenbürg)" = "Karlsdorf (früher [before:] Altenbürg)"

In the nearby town of Bruchsal was the residence of the Prince-bishop of Speyer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruchsal_Palace
And the Altenburg was his hunting lodge

And the Altenburg was also called "Alteberg"

            Thank you for the replies.

            1. Altenberg bei Odenthal is a possibility. Unfortunately, there seem to be no online records for the nearby towns. I found a local church, but without any definite dates, I do not feel I can ask them for information.

            2. Thank you for the link regarding hunting lodges. And thank you for taking time to provide additional information and links regarding Altenberg, Karlsdorf and Bruchsal. I do not see records online but there appears to be an OFB: Ortsfamilienbuch Bruchsal - - I wonder if that may be helpful.

I am still reviewing all this information. Thank you for taking time to reply.

            Kind regards,

            Ellen

I wonder, if Your ancestor was Catholic or not?
I think, the 1743 marriage was not a Catholic one?
Thus, it seems impossible, that his father was a hunter for the Catholic prince-bishop?

Thank you, Anna Sara. Those appear to be Catholic records, unless I am mistaken. If there are evangelical records at Family Search, I do not have access to them from here in the USA.

Can You please answer the question about Your ancestors religious confession?
That's important to know, when we try to locate his birth place.
Germany was devided between the Catholics and the Non-Catholics.
In 17th century, we had a 30 years long war because of the religion, and it ended by a draw. And the cleavage had been exacerbated by that.
