[gelöst] Holl emigrated from where to OberOsterreich und wappen? "Bruck"

    Hallo Monika,

My name is Basil Hohl and I am researching the HOLL/ HOHL family name in OberOsterreich.

I have come to a Hans Holl (Hollin) "auf der Bruck" Wastilgut 7 Mosl Ungenach b. etwa 1555 - tot 1644 (Hochmoos) Ungenach OberOsterreich and ehe Margarete gestorben 1643 Ungenach.

1500AD - 1580 Bruck Zell am Pettenfirst who were the landowners?

I would like to know where they actually originated from which country whether it is OberOsterreich or Augsburg or they came from Voralberg or Lorch or some where else and the time line of their emigration to OberOsterreich. I do know of a Wolfgang Heller was a Witness and I think a mayor of Vocklabruck in 1508 married to a Dorothea. - Possible relative.

My deceased father Karl Hohl told me when I was young that they seems to be able to go back to ~890 AD ?? and they where Franken. He was of a noble descent similar to a Graf and fled to Austria around Vocklabruck. This could be from the defeat of the Swiss wars , Turkish wars, Farmers wars or had enough of war . So many wars. Possible belonged to the Hapsburgers as they all lived under the Hapsburg rule. I was very young about 13yrs old.

    Holl wappen of OberOsterreich?

One thing that does get me is that he said they had a wappen that was Mauve (light faded Purpure) and white striped Fahnen on about six lances I would say this is on the crest as for the shield no idea possible striped arms of the shield. I cannot for the life of me find anything of these colours used and I have looked at every variant of the Holl name. I would say it maybe similar to the Holstein wappen use of lances and Fahnen. There is no use of Mauve in Austrian Heraldry. Red and blue yes not Mauve.

If you can assist me with any information that would be of great help Monika or if anybody else can assist me that would be great . Any questions I can answer or help you with please ask.

I have been tracing and trying to do the Holl /Hohl family tree Stammbaum of Upper Austria this is on Ancestry.com.au Hohl stammbaum

I'd be surprised if you'd get back further. This is about as far as you get with farmers. I'd even question the 1555 number. Where did you get that from? 90 years would indeed be a ripe old age for that time. You can't believe the estimates given in death records.

1500AD - 1580 Bruck Zell am Pettenfirst who were the landowners?
Sadly, this is often difficult to find out as there may have been several land owners in a single village. Even one farm could have been split between several owners.

Or not. It is doubtfull that you will find an answer to your question.

Every family seems to have that kind of myth. I'd ignore it.

Parents seem to like to spin stories about ancestors.

    Holl wappen of OberOsterreich?
As a rule, farmers didn't bear arms.

This is not a proper heraldic colour and shows you that this is just a tale.

          Hello Basil:

For your possible family crest, consult the heraldry subforum:

However, mind that as long as you haven't found any evidence that your ancestors are actually the ones who held that crest, don't trust the info your relatives gave you. This means that you will have to dig up documents showing or describing the crest while also mentioning one of your ancestors. It was not impossible to get a crest as commoners, but it would still require a high position in society - wealth, political power, or something similar.

My deceased father Karl Hohl told me when I was young that they seems to be able to go back to ~890 AD ??
This is pretty much only possible if your ancestors were of noble descent, as commoners did not really have family trees. Even then, I would not trust those historical trees - usually, they were made up and used to legitimise one's nobility and status, often trying to connect back to famous historical leaders, families or biblical figues.

So far, it just sounds like a bunch of family myths, similar to the American myth of the Cherokee princess great-great-grandmother.

I doubt that you can get any further using churchbooks. Tax/tithe lists, citizen ledgers, certificates of sale and court books are your friend (usually to be found in state or district archives).

          Cheers!

              Hello Basil,

you can find the death of your ancestors here:

Margarethe on page 5 (the third one)
Hans on page 8 (the last one)

Their age ist not mentioned. To both of them there are added some (greek?) words that I can not understand. Perhaps you should place these texts in the "Lesehilfe" http://forum.ahnenforschung.net/forumdisplay.php?f=84

Sometimes you can find books that are older than church books like land registers. To find out more about them I think it is best to write an email to the central archive of Upper Austria:

              landesarchiv@ooe.gv.at

              Good luck!
              Zita
