    [gelöst] Unknown Birthplace Location on a US Naturalization Document

    Attached is a Petition for US Naturalization for a Isadore Primer from 1920. The unanswered question is what was the birthplace location written on the document for Isadore's wife Tillie? It seems to say ??burg, Russia. In later US Census records from 1930, 1940, and 1950 Tillie Primer writes that her birthplace was in Lithuania. Others have told me that towns and villages in Lithuania do not normally end in "burg".

    Can anyone help with what the name is written on this document for Tillie's birthplace?

    Many thanks.

    Hi David:

    The most likely reading to me would be Urburg, though the first letter could also be an "N" (though in that case I don't know what the second letter would be).

    Her mother tongue was Yiddish, so it is possible that the place here is given its Yiddish rather than Lithuanian name.

    Regards

      Hello
      as German (Yiddish) speaking Russians, they maybe could have been deported during World War I, to the the east, to the city of Orenburg.

      Urburg = Orenburg ???

          To follow up on Anita's suggestion:

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jurbarkas#Etymology (Yiddish name Yurburg) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jurbar...wish_community

            There's a Taube Fisher from Jurburg who emigrated in 1913: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61...BF-VYX?lang=de
            In the USA the name Taube was often changed to Tillie.

              Thank you for everyone who has contributed. I will fill in what I know about Tillie.

              Her full name is Gilda "Tillie" Primer nee Fischer. Tillie's daughter (still living) believes her maiden name was spelled Fischer. She was born in 1897 and according to her information she provided in the 1920 US Census, she arrived in the US in 1910. Which would make her traveling across the Atlantic at age 13 or 14. I do not have arrival records or a ship manifest. Her destination appears to have been Chicago, Illinois. She married Isadore Primer 18 March 1917 in Chicago at age 19 and lived her whole life in the Chicago area. She had two sons with Isadore and she passed away in 1979.

              Anita's contribution is quite a find. It matches some of my records such as location (Jurburg and Lithuania) and on surname. It doesn't match on immigration year. The information of the Arrival Manifest has the town she emigrated from was spelled Yurburg. The person's name she provided as being a contact in her town of emigration was Ch Fisher.

              I can forward along the information from the Arrival manifest to the family and see if it matches anything they know.

              Many thanks.
