    [gelöst] Death 1794

Quelle bzw. Art des Textes: Church Book
Jahr, aus dem der Text stammt: 1794
Ort und Gegend der Text-Herkunft: Gernrode
Namen um die es sich handeln sollte: Johann Georg STÖTZER

Good evening. The writing is poor so I am unsure if anyone can help translate or transcribe this entry (#4). I think his age is 65 years, 2 months, 3 days. Perhaps he was the cantor for 29 years, 2 months, 8 days?

    Thank you.

    Regards,

    Ellen

          Dear Ellen,

that entry reads as follows in a free translation:

On January, 21th, at 6 p.m., Mr. Johann George Stötzer died. He has been the Cantor at the local Cyriakus Church as well as teacher at the boys' school. He has faithfully, diligently and dutifully hold both offices for 29 years, 2 months and 3 days. He was at the age of 65 years, 2 months, and 3 days. On January, 26th, which was the 3rd Sunday post Epiphany, he was brought to his last resting-place at the lower churchyard. His body ist a "Freileiche", which means as much as, that it was a poor mans funeral, if I'm not mistaken...

I am searching for the parents of August Wilhelm Stoetzer. I only know that he was cantor in Gernrode in 1826.

I am trying to find "proof" that Johann Georg Stoetzer is (or is not) the father of August Wilhelm Stoetzer.

Both men were cantors in Gernrode. Would it be unusual (or would it be likely) for a father and son to both be cantors in the same village? Is it the type of occupation that was commonly carried on through descendants?

              Thank you for any thoughts.

              Regards,

              Ellen

                Hallo Schimster,

I believe in this case Freileiche "free body" might mean he was buried without a fee in his honor.
                Lieben Gruß

                  Thank you.

I do see on Archion that the father of August Wilhelm Stoetzer is Johann Georg. I appreciate the help from everyone!

                  Kind regards,

                  Ellen
