Good evening. I am seeking help with three parts of this page:

It is regarding my ancestor Peter PERNA, book printer.

1. What is written in the top right corner (of the left page) regarding the two entries for the year 1557?

2. In the middle of the page - - regarding his son, Peter, born in 1582: what is the surname of the woman he married in 1607? Maria Truci?

3. I would appreciate help with the bottom paragraph which I am unable to read. I don't know if it states anything about his history. I know he was born in Lucca, Italy and fled to Basel in 1542.

Hi Ellen

The text in the upper right reads:

1557 Juni 9 B[ürger] v[on] Basel
(von Löck)
1557 Safranzunft gekauft
(Stückführer v[on] Bergamo)

So, in 1557 he became a citizen of Basel and a member of the guild of spice merchants ( https://www.safranzunft.ch/historisc...hte-der-zunft/ ). I don't know what Löck and Stückführer means.

Nach eigener Aussage von Peter Perna 1557 ... 17 Jahr in Basel
als Refugiant ...
verheiratete sich mit einer Refugiantin aus Locarno & bewarb sich
schon 1547 um's Bürgerrecht, musste wegen Ausweispapier nach
Italien reisen & wurde dort wegen seiner evangel.(?) ... in Gefängnis
... & entrann nur mit knapper Noth ... . Aus ...
kehrte er nach Basel zurück & wurde dann aufgenommen.

Thank you for the replies and links. It is my only ancestor who I am able to "Google" which is quite fun. There is an Italian author who has written several papers on Perna; I emailed him but sadly, he passed away last year.

I see these records are not online. But I do not know how this works. Because it is "public" - does this mean that a person can visit the State Archives Basel-Stadt and have access to this document? Or photograph the document? I will not be able to visit, but I wonder if researchers routinely visit the archives and would look it up (with or without a fee). I apologize but I do not understand how the archives operate.

Your transcription is interesting. He was married to Johanna (Giovanna) Verzasca of Locarno, Ticino (also my ancestor). Supposedly, she had a wealthy brother (Francesco) who was forced to flee Locarno and travel to Zurich because of persecutions against the Protestants.

Yes, in general one can access and photograph documents in the Swiss state archives, and one can also order scans of documents. But there are certainly excptions, and e.g. I don't know how to interpret "Erforderliche Bewilligung: Gemäss Archivgesetz BS". So I suggest that you post your question in the subforum for Switzerland. Some people there ar more experienced with archives.
