    Wast files discovery

    Hi guys,
I decided to use the Invenio database of the german archive this morning which I never did before,
And I stumbled upon my ancestor Urban Baszczok, apparently he has Wast files. His brother Jan/Johann Baszczok born 8/8/1911 has them too.
Many other close relatives from the same village have them as well, the amount is insane. I have never found any data of this anywhere else.
I'm honestly surprised from this discovery.

I wonder if this means he was a wehrmacht soldier in world war 2 for nazi germany or if it also has other meanings?

If you mean the Urban Baszczok, born 25.05.1905, then yes, he was in the Wehrmacht. Went missing in February 1941 and his unit at that time was: Grenadier-Regiment 472, 1. Batl.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yes its him, how did you find out this extra information about his 'went missing' unit and regiment?

He can be found in the "Missing lists" of the Red Cross.
        https://www.drk-suchdienst.de/en/how...to-collections - english explanation
https://vbl.drk-suchdienst.online/ - Search Form, its a bit tricky as its not a name search. So here are the steps to find his entry:
        1. Go to: https://vbl.drk-suchdienst.online/Fe...ummer/FPN.aspx
        2. In the "Band" input field enter: BU
        3. In the "Seite" input field enter: 521
        4. Click the buttion right below.
        5. His entry is in the first row on the right - unfortunately without a photo.

But how did you come with 'BU' and '521' ? I can't find those on Invenio. I noticed that Urban has 'Bergmann' under his name, what does it mean? Is it his second name? Would you be able to find Johann Baszczok too?

"Bergmann" is the profession of Urban B., i.e. miner (PL- górnik)

Invenio has nothing to do with the Red Cross Missing list, 2 seperate entities, so its not a given that you can find the names from the missing list in the Invenio database.
How came I up with BU & 521 - see this thread: https://forum.ahnenforschung.net/for...sten-datenbank

P.S. And no, Urban is the only one with the family name Baszczok I could find in this missing list...(the search script has limitations though)

many of them were also written as basczok instead of baszczok on their Wast files from what I saw,

anyway, I'd like to thank you a lot for the help since I wouldn't even have come up with the red cross database myself .

13:49 update: I also saw that the last brother is mentioned in the invenio databse, Alojzy Baszczok (written as Basczok Alois, Limsforst (Simsforst)) 31-5-1901

The only one who I do not see listed of all brothers is Pawel Baszczok who served in the Austrian army under Heller, captured by the french, fought in the polish-ukrainian war, polish-soviet war. He also participated in the silesian war and was part of the silesian resistance.

I guess you're basing this on Paweł Baszczok’s service and award records. It says there that he was drafted into the German army, the 360th Infantry Regiment in Magdeburg – you can actually find him on casualty and POW lists from World War I.

Later on, he joined Gen. Haller’s Polish Army!
