    Rentz, Katzschke, Opitz, Pfenning

Hello. I apologize for not being able to read or write in German. Forgive me if I am posting in the wrong forum. I am looking for information on the following:

Carl Heinrich Rentz b. August 10, 1853 in Oschatz (he died in 1919 in the US).

Heinrich Gustav von Katzschke b. abt June 1826 d. November 26, 1883 in Dresden.

Carl Heinrich Rentz (Henry Renz in the US) was my great great grandfather. The name Heinrich Gustav Katzschke is written in Carl Heinrich Rentz's bible (Lutheran) and referred to as "my father". I have no idea how or if they are truly related. I do not know why they have different surnames. The bible says Carl Heinrich Rentz's mother was Wilhelmina Rentz who died in in 1871.

I have many letters written in between 1860-1890 to Carl Heinrich Rentz from various relatives in Germany. Surnames include Katzschke, Richter, Opitz, and Pfenning. The wife of Heinrich Gustav Katzschke was Wilhelmina Ottilie Opitz. Reinhold Katzschke was one family member mentioned many times in the letters. He worked in the Royal Bookbinding Office and with a brother manufactured paper lanterns. The various family members were from Dresden, Leipzig, WeiBenfels, Kremitz, and other places. The letters, written in German, were translated into English and include pages and pages full of family info. They even provided addresses and burial places. Unfortunately, I only read and write in English so without being able to do research into the German records I cannot figure out how these families are related to Carl Heinrich Rentz.

If anyone could help I would be forever grateful. I have so much information on the families and would like to share if anyone is interested and willing to work around my language barrier. Thank you for reading this and for any help you can provide.

    Hi Liz,

what you need first is the original birth entry in the church book. Do you
    have this piece of paper?

From where do you have the info in what village or city he was born?

      Thank you for your reply!

No, I do not have the birth entry from the church. I really wish I had it. Carl Heinrich Rentz wrote in his family bible that he was born in Oschatz, Saxony on 10 Aug 1853. He also wrote that his mother was Wilhelmina Rentz. He was associated with the Lutheran Church in the US.

        Hi,
if you like, I can try to get a copy of the church entry if the dates and name you mentioned is correct.

That would be absolutely wonderful, if it is not too much trouble. If the church record tells the names of his parents you will hear me shout for joy all the way from the US

If you or anyone reading this needs some genealogical research in the US please let me know, I am happy to help. I live near the US National Archives in Washington, DC.

            Hi Liz,

I wrote an email to the church in Oschatz; now "we" have to be patient.
Have a nice start into the new week.
