I found this list of families from Eibenstock on the Family Search website. I have used different types of Family Books in the past but I am having difficulty understanding this one. I can find a number of my ancestors listed, but I am unsure of what is being stated.

For example - I have attached a link and picture of a page that includes Hans THAM (or DAMM). From prior research, I know that Hans THAM married Margarethe WITTICH circa 1640. So I think this page tells me their marriage was 17 NOVEMBER 1640.

How is Dorothea THAM related to Hans THAM? Or maybe there is no connection between Dorothea THAM and Hans THAM? Dorothea appears to be part of Family # 659, which is on the same page (left side). I understand that the information written in < > refers to the father of the named person. For example, the father of Margarethe WITTICH is Georg WITTICH.

Also, would "estomihi" translate to "estimated?" Does this book only give dates for marriages (not baptism or death dates)? There seems to be a lot of information here but I am not sure how to interpret it. Thank you for any help.

    Hi Ellen:

A general explanation of how the entries are built up is given here (on the left side): https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61...S-N9BK-6?i=453

This book contains only marriages (that is, it is an index to the marriage entries in the Eibenstock churchbooks from 1562 until about 1700). The entries are contained under the groom; bride's names are also indexed, but only with a cross-reference to the groom.

Thus, on the page you refer to, the entry on the right-hand side for THAM, Dorothea is merely a cross-reference to marriage entry 659. There is no other information here; Dorothea is not related at all to the Hans Tham mentioned on the next line.

Entry 659 states (in very condensed form) that Caspar Schürer, from Grießbach, on the 3rd Sunday after Trinity in 1601, married Dorothea Tham, daughter of Heinrich Tham of Zell. This entry can be found on p. 27, nr. 9 of the parish register (this is the cryptic "27/9" in parentheses).

As to your Hans Tham and Margarethe Wittich, the relevant entry is entry 676, which states that Hans Tham on 17 November 1640 married Dorothea, daughter of Georg Wittich, as shown on p. 66, nr. 23 of the parish register. There is no further information here on this Hans Tham.

As to the "Estomihi", that is the Latin name in the church calendar for the 7th Sunday before Easter (which is also the last Sunday before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday) - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quinquagesima. Many of the entries in this register use church calendar dating rather than our regular monthly calendar.

      Carl-Henry,

Thank you very much for taking the time to help and educate me here. I was making the mistake of trying to read this like some other Family Books that I have seen - - where the eldest family member is named on top and their descendants listed underneath. Thanks for your thoughtful reply.

      Kind regards,

      Ellen
