According to sekundary sources as Family Search and Ancestry Maria Matl was born in april 1885 or april 1884 i Wolfa - Ortenburg - Passau i Niederbayern .

Maria's parents was ; Mathias Matl and Czeczilla Gossy . Both born and married in Hungary .

Could somebody help me to find her birth in the German church book ?

Hi Bjorn
Ortenburg is one of the rare places in Bavaria that had not been catholic.
The few catholics there are registratedin the parish of Unteriglbach (former Holzkirchen <1863)
In the catholic register of baptisms there is no Matl !
So I suggest they have been acatholic (Lutherians)
The churchbooks are in
Landeskirchliches_Archiv_der_Evangelisch-Lutherischen_Kirche_in_Bayern

Would that mean that it's impossible to look up a birthrecord for Maria Matl ?

I find two of Marias siblings ; Matyas and John in the churchbook for Farkasfalva, Vas, Hungary . They was born in Hungary https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61...6-Z?cc=1743180 but i could nor find Maria here .

Marias parents got married january 9 1873 in Nagyszentmihály, Vas, Hungary .

According to FS ( Family Search ) about Maria Matl's first marriage in Portage Township in Columbia County in Washington december 3 -1902 - she was born in Wolfau, Ried im Innkreis, Upper Austria, Austria 16 april 1884 or 85 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XRLG-QVL

I must admitt that all this different information from secundary sources makes me confused . I do know for sure that Marias oldest sister Theresia Matl was born in Grosspetersdorf in Hungary , but todays location of Grosspetersdorf is in Austria .

I think first of all, we need to find the correct "Wolfa" for Maria's birth.

There doesn't seem to be a modern day place called Wolfa, but there are several called Wolfau: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfau...fskl%C3%A4rung)

None of them are very close to Ortenburg. There is one that is indeed close to Ried im Innkreis. Wolfau belongs to the parish of Senftenbach, the books are online here. When quickly looking over the baptism records for 1884 and 1885, I could not find a Maria Matl though.

What is also odd is, that the parents were supposedly married in Hungary, then moved to Wolfau in modern day Austria where Maria was born, then moved back to Hungary to have more children in 1888 there?

Ja und dieses Wolfau im Burgenland ist genau das ehemalige ungarische Vasfarkasfalva, wo Bjorn die Geschwister Matyas und John gefunden hat!

Ich glaube, dass dies das gesuchte Wolfau ist.

Hei Bjørn:

Just to summarize in English for you what some people have said above in German: The region we are talking about is the present Austrian state of Burgenland (see Norwegian wikipedia at https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgenland). Before 1918 it belonged to the Hungarian part of Austro-Hungary, and thus town names were in Hungarian, but after 1918 it belonged to Austria, and town names are now in German.


Thus, Nagyszentmihály (in Hungarian) = Großpetersdorf (in German), and Vasfarkasfalva (in Hungarian) = Wolfau (in German).

die Aufzeichnung bei familysearch.org, die Zita verlinkt hat (ebenso Björn im Post #3),
enthält die Taufeinträge der Geschwister der Maria namens Johannes (1881) und Matyas (1888), aber keinen Eintrag zu Maria (1884 oder 1885?).
Nun schreibt Björn, dass
die Hochzeit der Eltern in Nagyszentmihály war und
die älteste Schwester auch dort getauft wurde.

Nagyszentmihály = Großpetersdorf
Da der Taufeintrag der Maria nicht in Wolfau ist, würde ich in Großpetersdorf suchen.

Weiß Jemand:
Sind die Kirchenbücher von Großpetersdorf auch bei familysearch.org?
Oder "nur" bei der Diözese Eisenstadt?
