    Understanding Registerguthaben in 1937

Hello Everybody and good heath to all,

I am not sure where I should post this so have placed here, if this is not the correct forum, admin please move I will not be offended. This is more my curiosity that I ask for your help.

I have been given a USA passport from my Great Aunty, I see she visited Germany in 1937, I assume to visit her Mother in Koingsberg, OPR, who may have been ill as her Mother died in 1940 from breast cancer.

I see in the passport, payments noted as "Registerguthaben" every seven to ten days, I have tallied up to RM1400 in payments this converts to US$560 in 1937 which seems a large amount at the time for a four and a half month stay in Germany.

I would like to hear what people think, is it a huge amount at the time and the reasons for such a charge.

    Cheers and regards
    Jan

    Hello Jan,

as far as I have researched and understood, the Registerguthaben is the registration and payment (limited monthly and documented in the passport) of the exchange of foreign currency or redemption of traveler's checks in Reichsmark. See also "Registergeld" (register money).

Register credits for travel purposes are laid down in the Credit Agreement of 1934

    Hope this is useful...
    Gruß, Alfred

      Hello AlfredS,

Thank you very much, that makes more sense and logical. I thought it may have been a payment made not money received.

      Very helpful
      Jan.
