    Hello,

I will also post in English. My experience from traveling Europe, particularly Germany, is that the younger generation speaks English better than most Americans. I am new to the forum and apologize if I have posted in the wrong area. Please correct me if this request should appear elsewhere.

I am an American who is trying to break through a 'Brick Wall' in the Family Tree. I am looking for information on an emigrant named Adam Stoderl. My research has led me to believe that he was born in Bohemia in approximately August 1848.

He ended up settling in Minnesota and marrying a girl from Luxembourg. I've attached a photo of them for fun.

    Many Thanks!
    Colin

    Hello Collin,
here you have the parishbooks of Heiligenkreuz/Újezd Svatého Kříže.

I took a look inside and I found two quite interesting entries:
    1. An out of wedlock birth of an Adam Holúba on 18. Jul 1848 in Heiligenkreuz #36. He was the only Adam in this period in this village.

    2. An out of wedlock birth of a Barbara Zitzmann on 27. May 1857 in Wabitz/Babice #. The father was Lorenz Stoderl (Reservmann beim k. k. Khevenhüller Regiment und Häusler) from Heiligenkreuz #83. The parents married in Heiligenkreuz on 19. Oct 1859.

    Greetings, Peter

    Supplement 1:
Adam Holúba appears as a godfather on 11. Jan 1876 in Heiligenkreuz, so he is out of play.

    Supplement 2:
In the village of Zetschen/Čečín in parish Weissensulz/Bělá nad Radbuzou many Stoderl´s were born.

      Danke sehr!

Thank you for giving me examples. It is helping me learn how these parish books are organized. It is also helpful to know what 'Stoderl' looks like in old handwriting. Glad to see that this name appears in the region, I'll be busy looking through the parish books in the surrounding towns. Are there any 'cheats' or 'hints'....or perhaps an index that helps find the names in the books?

Also, are there census records available?

Thank You very much for your kind help!

      Colin

        Hi Colin,
        concerning the "census":
here is an overview of the currently available censi of this area of the Czech republic. From the "soudní okres Horšovský Týn" only some of the 1921 are available. Maybe later more of them will follow.

Note, that most of the registers of this periods have an (handwritten) alphabetical index inside. That makes researching much easier.

And here is a map of the Diözese of Pilsen. So you can check all parishes around Heiligenkreuz systematically.

        One question:
Where does the information come from about this area of his birthplace?

        Good luck,
        Peter

Thank you again. You've been a tremendous help giving me links to information depositories.

I have no credible information on his place of a birth. A relative wrote a book pre-internet that had him coming from Luxembourg. That has since been debunked thanks to the kind folks on the Ancestry.com forums:

American records are all over the map as to his place of birth:
          Germany in 1930, 1905, 1895 US & Minnesota Census
          Bohemia in 1920 US Census
          Austria in 1910, 1900, 1885 US & Minnesota Census
          Luxembourg in 1880 US Census

Through some Google searching I was able to find the Stoderl name in Heiligenkreuz at the appropriate time. I'm going off a 'hunch' that he may have come from the area. My plan is to start constructing the family trees of the Stoderls in this area and see if Adam appears.

          Thanks,
          Colin
