Spellings Ortman/Ortmann/Ortmanns Information on family members or friends of Joseph or Baltus Ortmanns. I have very little information on Joseph(gr grandfather),But his brother Baltus was a well known inn keeper in Detroit,MI. He was the proprietor of the Snug Harbor Saloon on Conors Creek and E. Jefferson ave. Also owned a saloon on Joseph Campau ave.,in Hamtramck. John and Horace Dodge were amoung his closest friends. He was one of the founders of The Arbeiter Society. He was also a member of the Elks Club Concordia#34 in Detroit. Passed away 1936 at age 69,buried at White Chapel Memorial Cemetery. Survived by his wife Paula. If anyone can help me research further I would appreciate any information. Also if someone could tell me what district the Corktown area is in so I could search the census records would be of great help. Thankyou in advance Jennifer Crustals(Jaffer4837@aol.com)

Jennifer Crustals schreibt 2002:
Recently I recieved a copy of the page of this directory which listed my GrGrGrandfather Joseph Ortmann and his brother Baltus. This is how they are listed "Joseph, finisher,h 145 Maple" and his brother "Ortmans Balthasar, painter,h 360 St Aubin av". Tese are both listed in the 1892 directory of the detroit city area. It was my understanding that members of the household would also be listed and as you can see they are not.Could someone assist me in finding out that information or at least tell me how to obtain it.I have tried to locate him on the census for that year but I have no idea what district this address is in so it's become impossible for me to find it.Any help would be most appreciated,Jennifer Crustals
From the 1899 Detroit City Directory page 1155:
Joseph, Saloon, 546 Gratiot Ave. Tel 4085
Balthasar - painter 385 Riopelle
From the 1901 Detroit City Directory, page 1230:
Josewph, finisher, 549 Adelaide
From the 1902 Detroit City Directory:
Joseph, age 45 died 11-19-1901
Balthasar, Steward of Musicians Club 41 Monroe, Home - same
Tele - Main 2703
Social Security death index lists: Adelaide Ortmann 10-10-1909 to June 1983. Possible daughter ? ? ?
as well as
Baltus Ortmann - 6-12-1905 to 5-10-1989 Possible son ? ?
Neither shows up in the 1900 Michigan census.
Hope this has helped . . .
