    Otto Schmidt ( von Schwaben or possibly Schwerborn )

    I was recommended to search on this site after having had contact with Mr Martin Haedrich and Christian Kirchner at Dagv. As Schmidt was and is a common name in Germany Martin predicted some difficulties to find OTTO in Rödigsdorf. Still I want to make a try;

    I am trying to find out where to look for more information in Germany of this very old ancestor of mine, and ofcourse his family.

    1) I have found his name to be Otto Schmidt von Schwaben and possibly also Schwerborn. He was supposedly borned around 1575 in Oberroßla/Rödigsdorf, Apolda, Weimarer Land, Düringen. Sorry if I mix up the German geography. He died in Garpenberg Sweden in the landscape Dalarna, year not known. He was the tennant ( had the leasing rights) of mining and forresting between the years 1621 - 1630 in Garpenberg, Dalarna.

    2) His wife was Anna Kristina Stigeln also borned around 1575 in Germany. Most likely she died in Sweden.

    3) Male child Melchior or Melchier Schmidt borned around 1600 in Germany and died in Tjärnäs, Torsåker 1671 in the landscape of Gästrikland. He was an owner and gruvfogde ( gerichtvollzieher? ) and testamented 50 Daler to the church and was seen as a wealhty man.
    He is in my direct ancestry line so finding more about his fathers and mothers families in Germany would be great.

    3.1) Child to Melchior Schmidt and his unknown wife (she died abt 1680 in Sweden and hereditry not known) was Lorentz Melkersson Schmidt b abt 1635 in Torsåker, Gävleborg, Sweden

    4) Female children to Otto and Anna ;
    Anna Sibylla Schmidt said to have been borned 1601 in Oberrossla, Düringerland. Died in the aftemath of childlabor was and burried 1641 in Sala Stads church in the landscape of Västmanland, Sweden. She was married to Georg Grissbach from St Andreasberg, Braunschweig.
    Christina Schmidt 1609 Germany, Oberrossla?. Died in Sweden 16- after having been married to Bergmästare Hans Philip Lybecker ( 1608- 1672 ) from Alt-Leningen, Braunschweig who also died in Sweden.

    So, what I am eager to find out is everything that can shed light on Melchior Schmidt and especially his ancestry in Germany pre about 1620. Where can I search such information and is it at all feasible?. I have no knowledge of doing research in Germany so all ideas will be appreciated and wellcomned.

    Hallo Leif:

    In Deutschland werden die evangelischen Kirchenbücher schrittweise auf dem Portal archion.de hochgeladen. Man muß einen Pass haben (etwa 20 Euro pro Monat), um sie einzusehen.

    Die Kirchenbücher des Kirchenkreises Apolda sind noch nicht hochgeladen, werden aber vielleicht später dieses Jahr kommen. Allerdings beginnen die Kirchenbücher von Oberroßla erst 1637 - also zu spät für deine Vorfahren.

    Zu Rödigsdorf gibt es auch ein Familienbuch (was man auf Norwegisch bygdebok nennt - gibt es das auch in Schweden?): Axel Marx, Familienbuch Rödigsdorf, Thüringen, 1578-1878 (Leipzig: 2012). Katalogeintrag bei familysearch hier: https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/4316217

    Vielleicht hat hier jemand Zugang zu dem Familienbuch und kann nachschlagen, ob der Otto Schmidt und seine Familie darin vorkommen.

      Thanks Carl Henry,
      Well I guess my hopes was not to high set to find news but sometimes you just get lucky so I will keep my input open here.

      Yes I heard of the familienbuch von Rödigsdorf and in fact I sent a question to axel@ibm-marx.de. I took a chance but so far no response, I will wait and see.

      Yes there are bygdeböcker here too but they might be more like yours I guess and are mostly called släktböcker often encompassing geographicly defined area with their communities.

      Take care

      Leif
