I am looking for information about the Peters family of Nienbuttel, the Kattenberg family of Windbergen and Wacken, and the Lueck family, which may have an association with Meldorf. Carsten Kattenberg and Ceciia Peters were my wife's great-great grandparents. Carsten Henry Kattenberg and Caroline Lueck were my wife's great grandparents. This is the information I have about these families, not all of which may be correct:

    Peters

Jasper Peters, * 14 Dec 1787, Hademarschen; † 22 Mar 1847, Nienbuettel; ∞ 1 Dec 1810, Schenfeld - Anna Bortha Behrens, * 20 Feb 1790, Nienbuettel; † 29 Nov 1858, Nienbuettel; ten known children, Ceciia (see below), Antje, Hans Christian, Anna, Andreas Karl (Andrew), Jasper, Anna Marghretha, Trina, Jurgen Heinrich (G Henry), and Peter Nicholas. Cecilia, Anna, Andreas, Jurgen Heinrich, and Peter Nicholas all emigrated at various times to the US, settling in California (see emigration records discussed below).

Cecilia (Silke) Peters, * 25 Jun 1811, Nienbuettel; † 9 Aug 1891, Germantown/Artois, California; ∞ 1 Dec 1832, place unknown - Carsten Kattenberg (see below); nine known children, Joachim (James), Jasper, Anna Dorothea, Hans Christian, Dorothea, Celia Maria (Mary), Carsten Henry (see below), Andrew, and Ana Margaretha. All the children appear to have been born in Wacken. All emigrated to the US at various times, except for Dorothea, who died shortly after birth or was stilborn.

    Lueck

Caroline Christine Lueck, * 21 Aug 1855, place unknown; † 17 Jul 1891, Germantown/Artois, California; ∞ 15 Oct 1859, Meldorf - Carsten Henry Kattenberg (see below); one son, August Carsten, * 2 Dec 1890, Germantown/Artois; † 23 Jan 1942, Willows, California. We don't know much about the Lueck family. We believe Caroline's father was A.H. (Heinrich) Lueck and her mother was Caroline Suhr. We have a book Caroline brought with her from Germany which has the name Caroline Suhr inscribed in the front paper along with the date, 1834. We also believe that Caroline had a brother, Otto, who also emigrated to the US.

    Otto Johann Lueck, * 5 Aug 1856, Meldorf; † 31 May 1914, Chicago, Illinois; ∞ 14 May 1883, Chicago, Illinois - Caroline Wallert, * 21 Sep 1864, Finkenthal, Gustrow; † 22 Jan 1927, Chicago, Illinois; two known children, William (1887-1958) and Henry John (1889-1950).

    Kattenberg

Joachim Kattenberg, * about 1747, place unknown; † 27 Aug 1809, Windbergen; ∞ ?, place unknown - Anna Dorothea Poppeke (1761-1806); four known children, Carsten (see below), Claus † 29 Nov 1844, Windbergen, Johann Christian, and Anna Margaretha, ∞ 14 Oct 1821, Meldorf - Clas Clasen.

    Carsten Kattenberg, * 2 Nov 1805, Windbergen; † 1867, Davenport, Iowa; ∞ 1 Dec 1832, place unknown - Cecilia Peters (see above).

Carsten Henry Kattenberg, * 4 Jul 1849, place unknown; † 21 Dec 1917, Germantown/Artois, California; ∞ 15 Oct 1889, Meldorf, Caroline Lueck (see above). Carsten Henry emigrated to the US in 1866 (see below), and appears to have returned to Germany to marry Caroline Lueck.

Emigration and history in the US

Joachim (James) Kattenberg, the oldest son of Carsten and Cecilia, and Jurgen Heinrich (G Henry) Peters, the 9th child of Jasper Peters and Anna Dortha Bohrens, Cecilia's parents, seem to have emigrated to the US together, arriving in New Orleans, Louisiana on 5 Jun 1852. Peter Nicholas, Jurgen Heinrich's younger brother, appears to have emigrated around 1859. It's not clear when Andreas Karl (Andrew) or Anna Peters emigrated, but Andrew was living in Tremont, California in 1870, and Anna died in Salinas, California on 27 Jul 1896,

On the Kattenberg side, after Joachim, Anna Dorothea was the next to emigrate, on 1 Sep 1856. She married Johann Heinrich (Henry) Biebush in Rock Island, Illinois on 1 Mar 1857. Hans Christian emigrated around 1865. It's not clear when Celia Maria (Mary) and Anna Margaretha emigrated, but Celia married August C Brinkman in Douglas, Kansas on 14 Jan 1869 and Anna Margaretha married John Sievers in California in 1883.

Carsten Kattenberg and Cecilia Peters emigrated on 29 Sep 1866, together with their sons, Jasper, Carsten Henry, and Andrew, and Jasper's wife and child, Marguerette nee Gribel and Cecilia Kattenberg. The family seems to have settled first in the midwest, where Joachim (James) Kattenberg was living. As noted above, Carsten died in Davenport, Iowa in 1867. Cecilia and her sons, Jasper, Hans Christian, Carsten Henry, and Andrew subsequently moved to Dixon, California, where Cecilia's brother, Jurgen Heinrich and Peter Nicholas, were living. Jasper remained in Dixon, passing away there on 12 Dec 1902. Cecilia, Hans Christian, Carsten Henry, and Andrew moved again around 1880 to Germantown/Artois, California, north of Sacramento, where the brothers established a prominent sheep ranching operation. Carsten Henry seems to have returned to Germany in order to marry Caroline Lueck in Meldorf in 1889, and then returning to Germantown/Artois, California, where their son, August, was born and were Caroline is buried, having passed away from complications from August's birth.

This is what we know about the Peters, Lueck, and Kattenberg families from Steinburg and Dithmarschen. We are interested, in particular, in knowing more about the other descendants of Jasper Peters, Cecilia's siblings, and the descendants of Joachim Kattenberg, Carsten's siblings. We are, of course, also interested in any information we can obtain about the Lueck family. As noted above, the family seems to have some connection with Meldorf, though the familhy lore is that Caroline may have been born in Christiansfeld in Denmark, about 79 km. north of Flensburg.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

    Sincerely,

    Mark
