The Polish surname Drewniak is of nickname origin, deriving from a physical characteristic or personal attribute of the first bearer. In this instance, the surname Drewniak derives from the Polish word "Drewniak" which means "wooden". Therefore, the surname Drewniak was given as a nickname to someone who was a dull or insensitive person. Alternatively, the surname Drewniak may be of occupational origin, deriving from the trade or profession pursued by the "Drewniak" meaning "wooden". Thus, the first bearer of the surname Drewniak was someone who made lattice-work of wood. Among the variants of the surname Drewniak we find Drewniany, Drewnowski and Drewnicki.
References to the surname Drewniak or to its variants include a record of a noble Polish family named Drewnowski. A member of the family named Jan was a sword-bearer of Chelm. His son entered the order of Jesuits. He also made a donation of three thousand gold pieces to the University of Lublin in 1678. Another reference mentions a family named Drewnick. This family belonged to the aristocracy of Lithuania and Russia. The ancestral seal of the Drewnicks was located in Esthland. The members of this house, Andreas von Drewnick held the position of chamberlain. He received from the Czarina Catalina I the estate of Audern in 1780. Der Namensträger hatte etwas mit Bäumen / erweitert mit dem Wald zu tun oder wohnte im / am Wald, könnte aber auch ein Hersteller
oder Händler von Schuhen mit Holzsohle - die ja zur Zeit der Namensentstehung wohl die meisten Menschen trugen - gewesen sein.
Ein derber Spottname, auf "Holz" bzw. "hölzern" bezogen, ist nicht auszuschließen.
