I am interested in knowing more about the familyname Hasert, Hasertz and the like.
What is the originally meaning of this surname? Is it connected to the place from where my ancestors came? In that case can the original area have been Hasel in Thüringen. Or is it a reference to a rabbit (hase]? Or even the tree like hazel?

Hi Johan,
the surname Hasert is derived from the Middle High German/Middle Low German word hasehart, hasart »game of hazard«, a foreign word from French hasard. The first one called Hasert must have been a passionate gambler.

Hasert also has nothing to do with hazel bushes or a region of origin.

The French and English versions probably come from Spanish word azar ("an unfortunate card or dice roll"). The Spanish word has been supposed in turn to come from Arabic, either from the name of a castle in Palestine, or from the word az-zahr (الزهر) meaning "dice". However, early evidence for this word in Arabic is lacking, as it is absent from Classical Arabic dictionaries, making the etymology doubtful (although any other source is unknown). Another possibility is Arabic yasara ("he played at dice").
