Help in identifying uniform

Apologies for writing in English.

I am hoping someone can help identify the insignia, medals, uniforms etc. In the attached photos. They are of someone who was engaged to my mother in law for 18 years, but due to circumstances they were never able to marry. The photos were found recently after her death and were obviously highly treasured. Therefore we are keen to know more about his military history. We are also trying to find more personal information about him and his family, which I will post in one of the other forums.

The first photo we think is from around 1939 when they got engaged.

Photos 2 and 3 we think were taken around 1942.

Photos 4 is Naples 1942 and 5 Jan 1943, probably North Africa.

Hoping some of you can help

In picture 3 he's wearing an Iron Cross (Second Class). It was mounted like this only the day it was awarded. He's also wearing an Infanteriesturmabzeichen, probably awarded at the same time (it looks pretty crisp). The black badge appears to be a Verwundetenabzeichen.

Photo 2: Badge as above. Picture must have been taken in September 39. The person shown is still carrying a belt buckle of the Reich Labour Service.

Hello Roy,

the man was an enlisted soldier in the infantry of the german army. In the third picture there ist a chevron on the left sleeve, a rank insignia of a Gefreiter. Probably also on pictures 4 and 5.

On the hats: Imperial eagle, cockade in the colours black-white-red, oak leaves without special meaning.
It is a tropical uniform which was worn in Africa, Southern Italy, Greece and the Balkans.


Auf den Mützen: Reichsadler, Kokarde in den Farben schwarz-weiß-rot, Eichenlaub ohne besondere Bedeutung.
Es handelt sich um eine Tropen-Uniform, welche in Afrika, Süd-Italien, Griechenland und dem Balkan getragen wurde.
