Standard Immigration to the USA on May 28, 1922

Hello, New to this forum, hope I have posted this in the correct area. I have been told my grandfather was born in Vienna in 1903. He arrived at Ellis Island on May 28, 1922 aboard the "Zeeland". When he arrived the officials shortened his last name to "DERGOSITS". I am trying to find out what his proper surname was in Vienna. My father believes the name may have been "DERGOSCHITSCH". Is this a proper Austrian surname? Is there other surnames which might be more likely?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

What is your source for this statement? Usually no one changed a name on Ellis Island or elsewhere.

By the way, on the passenger list it says "Dergositz".

In Europe I found the following spellings:
Dergoschits
Dergoschitsch
Dergositsch
Dergosits (most in Hungary)

Es geht ja um Emerich/Emerick Dergosits.
In der Passagierliste steht als Angehöriger sein Vater: Joseph Dergosits, Wohnhaft Wien XII (12. Bezirk - Meidling).
Und dort findet man auch die Taufe von Emerich * 9. Oktober 1903:
http://data.matricula-online.eu/de/o...01-52b/?pg=234

We are talking about Emerich/Emerick Dergosits, right?
The passengerlist is listing his father Josef Emerich as living in Vienna XII (12th district - namely Meidling).
And there we can find the baptism record of Emerich, born oct 9th 1903 (illegitimate/born out of wedlock).
http://data.matricula-online.eu/de/o...01-52b/?pg=234

All details corresponding to the Declaration of Intent in 1926 - i.e. the birth date. Also the information about his marriage (added in the baptism record) seems to work out and is identical to his grave record on findagrave.

In his baptism record several variants of th surname are mentioned: Dergosits, Dergositz, Dergoschitsch.

Hello, Unfortunately my grandfather passed in the 1970s. My father who is currently 86 told me the information about the name change. I have no proof, however.

Thank you for your response.

Hello,

Yes I was asking about Emmerich Dergosits. The date of birth does seem to match, I will have to check with my aunt to learn if she has any information about his father. Thank you so much for this information. I'll report back after I speak to my aunt.

Hi,

as most of the people with Dergosits surname come from Burgenland ( here only two http://www.the-burgenland-bunch.org/...names-cdef.htm ) and Dergosits i̶s̶ ̶o̶b̶v̶i̶o̶u̶s̶l̶y̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶M̶a̶g̶y̶a̶r̶ ̶o̶r̶i̶g̶i̶n̶,̶ ̶I̶ ̶t̶h̶i̶n̶k̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶w̶r̶i̶t̶t̶e̶n̶ ̶v̶a̶r̶i̶e̶t̶i̶e̶s̶ ̶w̶i̶t̶h̶ ̶s̶c̶h̶ ̶c̶a̶n̶ ̶b̶e̶ ̶d̶e̶d̶u̶c̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶f̶r̶o̶m̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶M̶a̶g̶y̶a̶r̶ ̶p̶r̶o̶n̶u̶n̶c̶i̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶w̶o̶r̶d̶s̶ ̶w̶i̶t̶h̶ ̶s̶. They sound like German sch ( in English sh ) and as people tend to write s.th. as heard, in some cases Dergosits changed to Dergoschit... in the German-speaking parts of Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Dergosits should be the genuine form.

Regards,

Thomas

Hallo,

Dergosits is obviously no Hungarian surname. The ending "-its" shows that your ancestors were members of the ethnic group of "Burgenland Croats". Learn more about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgenland_Croats

Dergosits is written in German style. Croatian Language has some more signs, so you would rather write it as "Dergos/šič". That is the reason why pronounciation varies.

Zita

Hello, Yes it is the correct person Emerich. Unfortunately I do not speak or read German. In the marriage or baptism record is there any information about Josef's wife? I understand from my Aunt her name was Maria? Does either record show her date of birth or maiden surname?

I also understand that Josef had a daughter, possibly named Theresa.

I also can't seem to find the date of death for Josef, doesn't show up on find a grave.

Thank you for all the help. I am planning a trip to Vienna next July and hope to visit some of these sites. Would like to find where they lived and possibly their graves. It would be great if there were relatives still there.

Again Thank you.

Hello,

Josef died on January 13th, 1944 (as can be found in the marriage record) and was buried on January 20th. His grave is still in use, you can find it here:

https://www.friedhoefewien.at/grabsuche_de
(write "Dergosits" in the field "Name").

You can also find his wife Maria buried here. Both marriage and birth record show that her maiden name was "Schragen" and that she also was born in Tobaj. If you need help with reading open a new thread in the "Lesehilfe" section of this forum.
