Hallo Jan,
Hello Scriptoria,
Thankyou for your information and feedback about the protestants from Salzberg. All the Benkmann hints you gave I have already noted as I try to sort out who is who. [ Michael Benkmann (* approx. 1700 in Frischenau?) Oo 13.11.1727 Gertrud Neumann He is "Servus" in Frischenau ] Where did you read Michael was "Servus in Frischenau" as the film entry reads "Servus in Paterswalde" and I think the marriage year is 1728 not 1727 ? I have seen in a book "Benkmann/Drope Vorfahren" where the author has Michael as "Servus in Fischenau" I suspect that Michael and Gertrud possibly are my 6xGreatGrandParents but I can not find the proof yet. I have found a taufe (No59) in Tapiau that maybe my Michael Benkmann *abt 1735 but need to find out the Ort as I can not read it. Many thanks again, Jan |

Hallo Jan,

Hi Jan:
Attached is a map showing the relationship of some of the villages (perhaps you already have this). In the upper left corner is Tapiau; just to the southeast and across the river is the Vorwerk (suburb, abbreviated V.W.) Kleinhoff. Paterswalde is in the lower right corner; Frischenau is to the west of that. Michael Benckmann is listed as a farmer in the village of Paterswalde in a tax list from 1746 (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61...416&cat=235997). He is not in a subsidy list for Paterswalde covering 1735-1740 (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61...403&cat=235997). Because the lots are arranged in the same order, you can see that the lot that Michael Benckmann farmed in 1746 was held by Peter Bessel in the late 1730s (in both cases a Gutzeit is listed before and Peter Schön is listed after). Note that there is also no Benckmann listed in Paterswalde in a tax list from 1726 (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61...396&cat=235997). Thus, it is entirely possible that the Michael Benckmann who eventually settled in Paterswalde was living in a surrounding village in the 1730s (such as perhaps Kleinhoff) Cheers --Carl-Henry |

Hello Scriptoria,
I bought the "Benkmann" book some twenty years ago when I first started doing all this family searching, I have very limited reading skills of the German language and I asked my Mother to read it and to translate the parts that would be associated to our family, she told me there was no real connection and the book was mainly about the people who came from Salzburg, this is where I suspected the Benkmann's came from. I found the book again early this year and started going looking thru it and finding the Benkmann's from Lindendorf & Paterswalde are possible connections and now researching the Kirchebuch from the regions. Hi Jan:
I read the marriage entry as follows: Michel Benckmann, servus ex Patersw: ist mit seiner braut Gertrud, des Xstoff Neu- manns von Frischenau: eheleibl. Tochter alhier proclamiert Dnca 20.21. et 22. p. Trin: und copuliret worden in Tapiau d. 12. 9br: In translation [note added - as Malte pointed out in the subsequent post, this marriage took place in 1727, not 1728] Michel Beckmann, servant from Peterswalde, and his bride Gertrud, legitimate daughter of Christoff Neumann from Frischenau, were proclaimed [had their banns read] here [in Paterswalde] on the 20th, 21st, and 22nd Sundays after Trinity [10, 17, and 24 October in 1728 note added - actually 26 October and 2 and 9 November 1727] and were married in Tapiau on 12 November So the bride was from Frischenau, which was in the parish of Tapiau. It was customary for banns to be read in the home parishes of both the bride and the groom (so as to give anybody who might have known one of them the opportunity to raise an objection to the marriage); thus, the banns were read both here in Paterswalde as well as in Tapiau. It was also customary to hold the marriage itself in the home parish of the bride, which is why it was held in Tapiau. Incidentally, there is another baptism of a child (a daughter Anna) born to Michael Benckmann of Kleinhoff and his wife Gertrud dated 16 November 1738 here (top entry on right-hand side): https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61...409&cc=3015626 Cheers --Carl-Henry Geändert von Gastonian (26.11.2021 um 16:35 Uhr) |
