Alois Polster the cavalryman from the 1880s
What does this postcard tell us? Who is Alois Polster? Does his uniform reveal his military unit? The relatives he wrote this card (sometime in the late 1880s) to are Forsters and Rauchs, who came from Weihern (Pfreimd) in 1849 and now live in Buffalo, New York. The exact relationship is not known; he is apparently a nephew or cousin of the Forsters. And Leutenbach? Which Leutenbach could that be? Do either the photo or the inscription on the back give us an clue as to the identity of this chap?

Hi Donald,
he wrote this in Leutenbach at the day of his mothers funeral. Leutenbach and Pfreimd are not so far away. He signed the card with "soldier" and with "Cavallerie", at that time in Augsburg. He mentioned his "beloved nieces and nephews" in Buffalo. Astrid Geändert von assi.d (14.05.2020 um 20:17 Uhr) |

Hello,
the back of the card only tells me that Alois was in the military in Augsburg and his mother was buried that day he sent the card. His military unit was the Königlich Bayerisches Chevaulegers-Regiment "König" Nr. 4 (4th Royal Bavarian Chevau-légers "King") based in Augsburg. The photograph is from before mid 1886, because there ist a Raupenhelm (dragoon helmet) on the chair, that has been replaced by the Pickelhaube in 1886. The mentioned "Vettern und Basen" are male and female cousins ( first grade ), not nephews and nieces. Regards, Thomas |

Hi
The photo-postcard was made by Conrad Stichaner, he made other postcards in the 1870ies and 1880ies. So I'll search for Alois Polster in the Lists of the War of 1870/71. By the way the surname Rauch is also an interest of my own researches. Regards Svenja |

Hi!
If he was a simple cavalryman in 1886/7 he is unlikely to have been fighting 1870/71, He would have made vice-corporal at least. |

Hi!
I would not be so sure of this. At least earlier (pre 1800) "Vetter" could be anything from Uncle to Cousin to Nephew. |
