She's in the index on GenTeam as Maria Katharina Wastel (https://www.genteam.eu/index.php?opt...ponent&lang=en). Near as I can tell from her marriage (which I would love to have deciphered as well: http://data.matricula-online.eu/de/o.../02-07/?pg=314), her father was Leopold Wastel, but no matter how I look at the Vater column, that's not what's written there, and the Unehlich column is clearly marked.


So what is written in the Vater column? Was she illegitimate or not?

Yes and No.
First she was born illegitimate ("unehelich") but later on accepted/adopted by somebody. You can read this in the sentence "Legitimiertes Kind des ....".

There is written:
Legitimiert - Siehe das Original Protokoll

Name of father: Wastl
Name of mother: Katharina Piegker.....(?), Dienstmagd


You should search for her parents marriage after her birth!

I keep staring at the mother's surname (or rather, the squiggles where I know the mother's surname has to be), and I can't make it look like Püchel. Any ideas on why the difference? I really don't think it can be a different person; Wast(e)l is not that common a name in these parts.

they wrote what they heard. If the priest didn't hear verry well and the people didn't speak verry clearly ......
So this could be the reason why the mothers name is wrong.
