    Hi James,

"solani" is no classical latin. soldanus or solanus was a man living on a "Sölde". Thus called in southern Germany and Austria were farms too small to pay the cost of living, so their inhabitants additionally had to sell their workforce. "solani" is just the genitive derived from.

    Best regards, Jens

    Hi James

"solanus" (the nominative form) is explained here https://www.genealogia.de/berufe.htm#berufe-s -- a farmer on rented land.

    Regards, Ronny

Hello, Rita. The specific example I am looking at is the ninth entry on the left for Andreas Schuss, however, I have seen it in multiple entries. In this priests hand, the spelling appears to be "solani".
    Thank you for your response.
    Regards,
    James

    "Solani" meaning - Latein

    Greetings!
I see the word "solani" in many Matricula entries. I believe it is an abbreviation for "bulbus solani" or "tuber solani", and meant as a euphemism for "farmer", specifically "potato farmer" (from Latein Worterbuch site).
Thank you in advance for any comments.
    Regards,
    James
