Hello members,
I am researching my German paternal side of the family -my grandfather's grandfather hailed from Saxony-Anhalt. I have been able to trace it back to the mid 18th century ca 1750, but that is beside the point.

My question is, does anyone know or have any idea where the surname Wiedewilt originates? Does anyone know its etymological roots? Does it have any meaning? Is it associated with any specific class, trade or location?

From what I can gather, there are several similar surnames for example Wieduwilt, Wiedewelt, Wiedewild, etc. Is there a possibility that some of these are variations of the same name?

Furthermore, it seems most of these surnames can be traced back to Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony, where most of the Wieduwilts, Wiedewilts live or lived.

According to the site Heraldry Institute, the surname Wieduwilt seems to have noble origins.

"Emericus Widuwilt 1363 Nassau Schultheiß Johann 1707 Schöningen Kriegsmann Nicolaus 1388 Obersiggingen Advocatus Übername vielleicht nach dem Anfang des alten Kirchenliedes: "Herr, wie du willt". Widuwilt Diesem Namen wird auch ein Adelskennzeichen zugeschrieben, das von dem nachstehenden Wappen dargestellt wird. Dies bestätigt ferner bei einer historisch- wappenkundlichen Deutung seiner Symbole die Gewißheit einer geschichtlichen Bedeutung der Familie durch Vermögen, Adel und Ansehen."
