Standard Josef Mergen Bücher über Auswanderer nach Amerika

*See English below for proper grammar*

" Mergen , Auswanderer BKS 588 : . " 1884.01.31 Nach New York ...

Danke,
Euroroots1976

I recently discovered a resource that I'm having trouble with and I hope that one of you might have additional information.

Josef Mergen, a teacher in Germany wrote books (and essays) in which he collected the names of all known people who emigrated from Trier/Moselle/Rheinland-Pfalz to the United States. The records date back to the 19th century. These books were published in the 1950's.

I found a footnote for a record that provides both details on why my relative wanted to leave Germany as well as other family information but it doesn't indicate which book the information came from. The only information in the footnote is as follows:

"Mergen, Auswanderer BKS 588:. "1884.01.31 Nach New York…" and it states that it was signed in the court of Neumagen.

There is one book in his collection that mentions Neumagen, "Mergen, Josef. - Die Amerika-Auswanderung aus dem Amt Neumagen. - In: Heimatkalender für den Kreis Bernkastel. - 1956. S. 68-71. - 1956" but it is not clear from the above footnote if this book is even a match.

If anyone is familiar with these books, do you know which book "BKS 588" signed in the Court of Neumangen in 1884 is referring to? Do these books and others in the series have an index? I'm hoping the books are set up by year of emigration and residence.

Thank you,

Hello Jogy,

Thank you very much for your detailed response! I appreciate your time.
I had the family tree you posted from the Thalfang project and that's where I found the reference to Joseph Mergen.

Are Joseph Mergen's books available online? This valuable resource is not known to many people.

Thanks,
Euroroots1976

As written, the book is from 1955, issued by the district administration Bernkastel. On the Internet it is unfortunately not included. The district administration shall periodically publish yearbooks, which report also to emigrate.

Several of Josef Mergen's books are available through the LDS microfilm rental ---in the USA only, I think. I have photos of several of the document pages, and I am gradually transcribing and translating them on my blog.

First, look at my posting
http://tgkohn.blogspot.com/2016/06/j...migration.html
that lists all known publications by Mergen.

My current (slow) work begun in September 2017 is transcribing and translating two of his works "Die Amerika-Auswanderung aus dem Reigerungsbezirk Trier" (8 volumes) and with a transcription of his 1958 notes that was made by Dr. Maria Cremer in the Salt Lake City LDS genealogy library, "Emigration to America from the District of Trier (Germany) during the 19th Century/Amerika-Auswanderung aus dem Regierungsbezirk Trier im 19ten Jahrhundert."
Seit 09.2017 habe ich die Arbeit zwei von Mergens Werke zu überschreiben und übersetzen: "Die Amerika-Auswanderung aus dem Reigerungsbezirk Trier" (8 Bände) und eine von Maria Cremer aus den LDS-Bibliothek gemachten Ueberschreibung seine Notizen, "Emigration to America from the District of Trier (Germany) during the 19th Century/Amerika-Auswanderung aus dem Regierungsbezirk Trier im 19ten Jahrhundert."

Volume/Band 7, "Die Amerika-Auswanderung aus dem Kreis Trier-Stadt."
http://tgkohn.blogspot.com/2017/09/d...dem-kreis.html
is relatively limited in scope, by its focus on residents of the city of Trier. The book assigns entry numbers to each person or group, without regard to date or alphbetic order.

The 1958 notes, "Emigration to America from the District of Trier (Germany) during the 19th Century/Amerika-Auswanderung aus dem Regierungsbezirk Trier im 19ten Jahrhundert."
http://tgkohn.blogspot.com/2017/09/e...strict-of.html
are more generally aimed at the region around Trier, and it is arranged alphabetically.

If you would like to place a priority on a name of interest, please provide a comment on the blog with the forename and family name, and any other data you have. (Requests made on this forum may not be noticed for several weeks.)
